WASHINGTON (AP) White House on Friday, said Israel must decide for itself whether to enter the Gaza Strip with ground forces, or not, but doubted it would avoid civilian casualties and ensure the flow of humanitarian goods.
White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe did not answer directly the question of whether the United States think of a ground operation can be justified or would attempt to prevent the attack.
"I do not want to talk about the operation that has not happened ... (Operations) it would be a decision made by Israel," he told reporters.
"From now on, every action they take in the whole operation is necessary to avoid civilian casualties, and we also need to continue the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip," said Gordon.
U.S. President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been in touch regularly with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and warned Israel about the need (to avoid civilian casualties), said Johndroe.
"So I guess every step they take, whether it be from the air or on land or whatever its nature, is part and parcel of the same operation," he said.
Rice told reporters after meeting Bush that the U.S. is working toward a ceasefire that "lasting and sustainable" in the Gaza Strip, but he now does not plan to travel to the Middle East to seek a ceasefire.
"We're working toward a ceasefire that would not allow the revival of the status quo that makes Hamas can continue to launch rockets out of Gaza," Rice said.
There has been no signal ceasefire on the seventh day of Israeli air attacks, which killed at least 424 Palestinians and injuring another 2,000 people. Four Israelis were killed by Palestinian rockets.
"It is clear that the ceasefire will not happen as quickly as possible, but we need a ceasefire that can be durable and sustainable," Rice said.
He claimed Hamas has rejected the Arab demand to extend the ceasefire that ended last month.
It seems to be easy for Rice to keep working over the phone rather than making a visit to the region today, said Johndroe.
