KOMPAS.com - Komodo dragons do look hideous and known to be dangerous. However, recent research conducted by researchers at Rutgers University in the United States and the University of New South Wales, Australia, revealed that the Komodo dragon bite was not stronger than domestic cats.
The team of researchers led by Dr Stephen Wroe measure bite force by giving meat to the dragons. They let the dragons to eat it, then measure the strength of its bite. The study published in the journal PLoS ONE this month.
Scientists said that while dragons bite weak, but very deadly. One reason is because dragons inject a toxin into the prey's body as it has been widely known. The poison is injected dragons prey causing shock and severe bleeding.
"When we look back on the computer model results, the data show that the komodo dragon acts like a giant corkscrew. By using his body, dragons prevent too great an investment of energy in the muscles and bones of the head, this system is very efficient," says Wroe.
Wroe added, the komodo dragon is an animal of ancient or primitive. However, the Komodo dragon has become one of the most effective killer of animals. Komodo looks as amazing animals that managed to survive across the ages, but at the same figure that could kill.
